Times are typical for a repeatered system fault in open ocean; a shallow-water anchor drag can close in under thirty hours, a deep-trench break can take two weeks. We plan to the worst case.

Line-OTDR supervision flags an abrupt drop in the 10 kV feeding voltage on MA-1 Sector 3. Within a minute the duty engineer has opened the carrier bridge and declared a probable cable fault.

C-OTDR fixes the break to thirty metres
Coherent optical time-domain reflectometry measures backscatter from the broken fibre and converts it to distance: 1,842 km from the Carteret shore-end, plus or minus a cable length. Coordinates are issued to the nearest vessel.

The Resolution slips her readiness berth
MS Meridian Resolution clears Halifax inside twelve hours of the fault being declared, loaded with 2.4 km of spare armoured cable, two repeaters and a jointing crew. Consortia owners are formally notified of mobilisation.

Dynamic positioning over the fault
The ship holds position to within two metres using thrusters and GPS, then begins a series of grapnel runs across the seabed to catch and lift the buried cable to the surface.

Both cut ends brought to deck
The damaged section is cut away. Both healthy ends are winched aboard, inspected, and prepared for splicing. The jointing bay is rigged on the aft working deck.

A new section is fused in
Jointers fuse each fibre under a microscope, re-terminate the repeater, seal the joint and pressure-test the housing. The new 2.4 km section is paid out between the two original ends.

The plough buries the cable three metres down
A subsea plough re-buries the repaired route to protect it from fishing gear and anchors. A post-installation test confirms continuity and repeater health along the full sector.

Traffic handed back to the carrier
Both fibre pairs are lit and provisioned back to the carrier's network. Mean time to restore is logged, the joint is warranted for twenty-five years, and the Resolution returns to readiness.
