From fault alarm to restored service

A representative deep-water repair under our standing agreements. Clocks start the moment shore-station monitoring raises the alarm.

Fault detected

Automated line monitoring flags a drop in line current and optical loss. Ops Rotterdam confirms with both terminal stations and opens an incident.

T + 02:00

Fault localised

Electroding and coherent OTDR measurements from each shore end triangulate the fault to within a few hundred metres of kilometre post 1842.

T + 08:00

Vessel mobilised

Nearest standby vessel loads spare cable and joint kits, files clearances, and sails. Average mobilisation across our zone: 22 hours.

T + 3 days

On station & recovery

DP2 hold over the fault. In ROV depths the cable is cut and recovered by manipulator; beyond 3,000 m we detrench and lift with grapnels.

T + 4 days

Splice & test

Both ends brought to the jointing room; a universal joint splices in spare cable. Full optical and electrical acceptance tests run end-to-end with the terminal stations before lay-down.

T + 5 days

Reburial & as-laid survey

In trawled or anchored waters the repair bight is jetted back below the seabed, and the as-laid route data is issued to the owner and charting authorities.

Service restored

Traffic back on the direct path

The owner confirms restoration, the incident closes, and the vessel returns to standby. Median alarm-to-restoration on deep-water repairs in 2025: 6.4 days.
